Spelling Activities
10x each - Write each word 10x from the beginning of the word to the end of the word. Do not write each
letter down the column!
Pyramids 3x – (Also called word build) Write the word and underline it. Under the word, begin with the first
letter. Write the first and second letter on the 2nd line, etc. (If the word is 4 letters long, you will use 5 lines
of paper.) You may do this on the computer!

Outlines 5x - Also called trains. Write the word and then outline it with straight lines by making tall boxes
around tall letters, short boxes around short letters and boxes that hang on letters that hang. (No sloppy
circles!) You may type the word on the computer and outline by hand.

Doodles 3x - Make a key for the entire alphabet by using shapes, doodles, faces, numbers, etc. Then write
your word spelled correctly and in doodle.

Cost of Word 3x - Make a key for the entire alphabet where a = $.01, . . . z = $.26. Write your word and
underline it. Then write the word down the column with the amount of the letter next to the word. Finally,
write the word again, with the total cost of the word. (You’ll have written your word 9 times when you’re done.)

ABC Order 3x - Write your words in a column in alphabetic order. (You will have 3 columns of words in ABC
order when you are done.) You may use the computer for this activity.

Definitions - Write your word and underline it. Then write the definition from the dictionary, including page
number where found. On the next line, write the definition in your own words. Do this for each of your 5
words. You may do this on the computer.

Spelling Sentences - Write your words in good, 6th grade sentences using details and elaboration! Underline
your spelling word. Also include the part of speech the word was used in your sentence. You must have 5
sentences. You may do this on the computer.
Magic Numbers – Write each of your words in a sentence using the magic numbers assigned. For example, if
the magic numbers are 7, 10, 8, 13 and 15, you will use one of your words in a sentence with exactly 7 words,
one in a sentence with exactly 10 words, etc. Make sure you underline the spelling word and count the words in
the sentence. Write the number of words after the sentence when you check it! (Computer = ok)
Synonyms/Antonyms - Write your word and underline it. Find and write 2 synonyms and 2 antonyms for each
word. Make sure you label which are synonyms and which are antonyms! You may do this on the computer.
Word Form - Write your word and underline it. If your word is a verb, write (v.) and give the past, present
and future tense of the word. If your word is a noun, write (n.) and give the singular and plural forms of the
word. If your word is an adjective (adj.) or adverb (adv.), write the abbreviation and explain what it describes.
If your word is a conjunction (conj.) or preposition (prep.), write the abbreviation and explain what it does.
Syllabication 3x - Write your word, splitting it up into syllables using dots between the syllables. Use the
dictionary for help!

Word Story - Write a story with a clear beginning, middle and end. Use all of your words in the story and
underline them. (Minimum of 10 sentences) You may use the computer for this activity.
Acrostic Poem - Write an acrostic poem for each of your words.

Word Collage 2x - CUT OUT your spelling words or letters to make your words from magazines, pictures,
newspapers, etc. and glue/tape them to another sheet of paper.
Word Picture - Draw a picture for each word showing the meaning. Label the picture using the spelling word.
Find Words in Literature - Find your words in text. Write the spelling word, along with the title of the
literature, author and page number.
Scrabble - Write your words so they crisscross each other and make a scrabble puzzle. Sometimes this is
easier on graph paper. You can do this on the computer if you choose.
Crossword Puzzle - Scrabble your words and draw boxes around the letters to make it look like a crossword
puzzle. Number the words 1 through 5. Under the puzzle, write a clue, question or statement to go with your
word. You can go to DiscoverySchool.com and make a computerized puzzle or use graph paper if you would like.
You must fill in the answers so that you turn in the answer key!

Word Search - Minimum of 10 lines across and 10 lines down. Hide your words in the word search and circle
them when you are done. You may go to DiscoverySchool.com or other puzzle maker sight to make a puzzle. You
must find the words in the puzzle so that you turn in the answer key! You may also use graph paper if you
would like.
Hidden Words - Draw a picture and “hide” your words in the picture. Picture needs to be colored nicely.
Word Clues - Write 3 “I am” statements for each word.
For example: I am a noun/verb/adj. I am a synonym/antonym for______. I am singular/plural. I have _____
syllables. I am used to _______. I mean to _______. You may complete this on the computer.
Comic Strip - Design a 3 panel comic strip for each word.
Word Shapes - Use your word a minimum of 5 times to make a shape. You can lightly draw the shape and then
write the word around it, if that is easier.
Silent Letters 5x - Write you words 5x each and cross out all of the silent letters. You may use the
computer.
Consonants 5x - Write your words 5x each and circle all of the consonants with a grading pen. You may
choose to write all the consonants in a different color (grading pen), instead. You may use the computer.
Vowels 5x - Write your words 5x each and circle all of the vowels with a grading pen. You may choose to
write all the vowels in a different color (grading pen), instead. You may complete this on the computer.
Prefix/Suffix - Add a prefix or suffix or both to each of your words. Use your new word in a sentence
and underline it. You will have 5 sentences when done. You may use the computer for this activity.
Stamp 3x – Use alphabet rubber stamps to stamp out each of your spelling words 3 times.
Stencil 2x – Use stencils to stencil out each of your spelling words 2 times.
Computer 4x – Type each of your spelling words 4 times using a different font and/or color for each word. DO
NOT COPY AND PASTE! Don’t forget to print!
Phone Numbers 5x – Write each of your words 5x, then phone spell the word using the phone keypad to write
the number that corresponds to each letter.
