Pre-AP World History Agenda March 19 (Thursday) Era III: Post-Classical Civilizations, 300 to 1000 A.D. (C.E.) By the end of this unit, students will demonstrate knowledge of the Byzantine Empire and Russia from 300 to 1000 C.E. by: 1) explaining the establishment of Constantinople as the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire; 2) identifying Justinian and his contributions, including the codification of Roman law, and describing the expansion of the Byzantine Empire and economy; 3) characterizing Byzantine art and architecture and the preservation of Greek and Roman traditions; 4) explaining disputes that led to the split between the Roman Catholic Church and the Greek Orthodox Church; 5) mapping and assessing the impact of Byzantine influence and trade on Russia and Eastern Europe. Unit Overview: March March March March March 17 19 23 25 27 Byzantine Empire The Great Schism Islam Islam Byzantine Empire and Islam Exam Objectives: We will be able to explain and discuss the achievements of the Byzantine Empire and the split of the Christian Church (Great Schism) into Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic branches. Closing Task: Was the Great Schism (splitting of the Christian Church) a positive or negative event for Christianity? Explain. Part I – Lecture: The Byzantine Empire and the “Great Schism” (60 minutes) Whole Class Take notes as we discuss the Byzantine Empire and Great Schism (the split of the Christian Church into the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church. Please ask any questions you have during the lecture. Part II – Roman Catholic vs. Eastern Orthodox Church (15 minutes) Group / Individual You will work with your group to answer the questions about Justinian’s Code. After answering these questions, use your textbook to complete the map located on the back of this sheet. Part III – Analyzing Justinian’s Code and Map Activity (Time Remaining) Group / Individual You will work with your group to answer the questions about Justinian’s Code. Read Chapter 10, Sections 1 and 2 and be prepared for a quiz on this material. 2.
