Life Processes SOL Study Guide Name _______________________________________ Life Cycles Plants and animals go through changes called a life cycle. Life cycles are when plants or animals change in a pattern as they grow. Some animals change a lot as they grow and some animals only change a little. Frog Life Cycle A frog has a life cycle. Frogs lay eggs in water. Tadpoles hatch from the eggs. Tadpoles have tails to move and gills to breathe in water. Tadpoles keep changing. Tadpoles grow legs. Their tales get smaller. Tadpoles get lungs to breathe in air. Then they look like little frogs. They climb onto land and grow bigger. Butterfly Life Cycle A butterfly has a life cycle. A butterfly begins life as an egg. A tiny caterpillar, or larva, hatches from the egg. The caterpillar eats and grows. Then it stops eating. The caterpillar becomes a pupa and makes a hard covering. Inside the covering, the pupa slowly changes. Then a butterfly comes out and flies away. Plant Life Cycle Plants have a life cycle when flowers change to a fruit. Most plants begin their life as a seed. A seed is made up of stored food and a tiny plant. When a seed gets water and warmth, it starts to grow The plant will sprout and grow above ground. As the plant grows it develops leaves. When the plant is fully grown, its blossoms or flowers make fruits that hold seeds.
