SBI3U GENETICS PROJECT Due Date: _____________________ Research one topic from the list below and present your findings. You may choose either Project A (Genetic Diseases or Syndromes) or Project B (Applications of Genetics) Projects A and B will be written in the form of a pamphlet. The level of communication should be aimed at the general public. References must be included and typed on a separate page Everyone must get teacher approval for their topic before they begin their research. If plagiarism is suspected the teacher will interview you to determine if you can explain the information in your own words. Be sure you understand what you write. Plagiarized work will get a mark of zero. Format of References - References need to be typed on a separated page using APA format. - Use at least 4 references including your textbook. - List references in alphabetical order by the first letter of the reference. - Include references for any graphics or pictures used. - Follow the guidelines attached to this project. Useful Websites Human Genome Project Information, http://www.ornl.gov/hgmis/medicine/assist.html Your Genes, Your Health, http://www.yourgenesyourhealth.org/ DNA from the Beginning, http://www.dnaftb.org/dnaftb/ Online Directory of Genetic Resources, http://www.geneticalliance.org/diseaseinfo/search.html Understanding Gene Testing, http://www.accessexcellence.org/AE/AEPC/NIH/index.html Understanding The Human Genome Project, http://www.accessexcellence.org/AB/IE/Intro_The_Human_Genome.html Rare Genetic Disorders http://www.nature.com/scitable/topicpage/rare-genetic-disorders-learning-about-geneticdisease-979 How Genetics Diseases are Inherited http://rarediseases.about.com/od/geneticdisorders/a/inheritance.htm SBI3U GENETICS PROJECT Project A: Genetic Diseases or Syndromes Format of Pamphlet - One legal page (front and back) typed with graphics and a title. - Approximately ¾ of the pamphlet should be text and ¼ well labeled graphics. - Use only genetics vocabulary learned in class or define any new terms used. Use text glossary to check new vocabulary. - Paraphrase information, no direct quotes are required. - Graphics can be hand drawn or printed from the computer but must have labels and a title and a reference below the image. See Marking Scheme for full guideline for pamphlet Genetic Diseases or Syndromes For the genetic disease or syndrome: - describe the symptoms and any effect on the life span or quality of life - the chromosome affected by the mutation (p219-220, 227) - the type of mutation (deletion, duplication, translocation, inversion or nondisjunction p 173, 226-227, 229) - the type of inheritance pattern (autosomal dominant or recessive p210-218, sex linked dominant or recessive p219-224) - the probability of the condition (ex 1 in 3600 births) - any known or suspected causes of genetic mutations leading to this condition (ex. radiation, specific chemical exposure, German measles in first trimester) - the usefulness of genetic testing of the fetus to detect the condition (aminocentesis p231-233) Topics: 1. Tourette syndrome 2. Huntington disease 3. Tay Sachs disease 4. cystic fibrosis 5. colour blindness 6. sickle cell anemia 7. alkaptonuria 8. phenylketonuria 9. progeria or Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome 10. hemophilia 11. Most answers should be about one paragraph in length. - How does this technology work? - When was this technology developed? - How much does this technology cost? - What are the advantages and disadvantages of using this technology? - Why was this technology developed? - Who works with this technology? -Who is affected by this technology? - Where is this technology used? - How will our lives be changed by this technology?
