Children look at the picture as archaeologists – what can they ‘discover’ on their dig. What have they found? Write possible explanations on post it notes and stick on enlarged picture. Archaeologist Artefact Tray – Show children a tray full of similar objects to that found on the display table. Ask the children key questions about what they can see. Who, What, Where, When, Why, How? Scribe ideas on flipchart. Day in the Life: read pages 2 and 3 to the children. Gather vocabulary around the five senses on the flip chart. Children then have time to role play a St Thomas CE Primary – Narrative Immersion Creative Curriculum ‘person’ from Pompeii going about their daily life – jobs, entertainment, food etc. Take photos to go in books. 5. Researching Pompeii: give children iPads (Woodlands, Ducksters), books on Ancient Rome, Printed information from Twinkl etc. As archaeologists we need to find out more about this time period with a focus on food, clothing, entertainment, jobs, daily life etc. Create a class spidergram on the IWB. Give children time to do research – find 4 or 5 facts and record in books. Collate on class spidergram. 6. Writing Report: Shared write one paragraph for a class report. Identify: subheading, topic words, factual, no opinion, no I, St Thomas CE Primary – Narrative Immersion Creative Curriculum Week 2: WB 19/9/16 (up to p10) Before the eruption (key writing skills) 1. Performance Poem: read p6 to the children. Focus on the poem and the word choices made. Brainstorm words to describe earthquakes and feelings around earthquakes on flip chart. Show the children a Michael Rosen performance on IWB to show how a poem can be performed with actions. Children then work in small groups to write the next verse for the earthquake poem with actions. Each child to write one sentence. 2. Composition: Children to have selection of musical instruments and compose an accompaniment to their performance poem. Perform poems and film basic punctuation. Children then use their own facts to write one para for a report. 3. Exploring Relationships/Role on the Wall: Outline for Tranio and Livia. Read p 7 to the children. Refer back to work done in previous week on schooling in Ancient Rome. Gather ideas for gender roles on the outlines. Children to have opportunity to role play being Tranio and Livia – using prompts from the outlines. Photo of outlines and role play in books. 4. Ancient Roman Games: Children in two groups: one group to play noughts and crosses as a mini competition. Other group to make own dice with Roman Numerals on and then play a simple St Thomas CE Primary – Narrative Immersion Creative Curriculum on iPad. Watch performances back on IWB. Giving and receiving Friendly Feedback. Week 3: WB 26/9/16 2. Earthquakes: children to 1. Role Play: read p11 para 1 dice with their dice. Children swap half way through session. Take photos for books (Maths books too!) 5. Research and Design Theatre Masks: children to have iPads and research ‘Ancient Roman Theatre Masks’ – look at features of the masks and discuss. Children are to then design their own mask – think about what character they are going to be and how they will represent this on the mask (facial expression and features) Children need to know they will be made on paper plates with junk materials. 6. Making the Masks: Children have time to make their masks and evaluate them. Pictures to go in books with evaluation. 6. Verb Hunt: Verbs in a bag St Thomas CE Primary – Narrative Immersion Creative Curriculum (p11-16) The Eruption watch footage of an earthquake happening on You Tube, look at pictures of damage caused by earthquakes. Quick class KWL grid on IWB – ask children to suggest why/how earthquakes happen. Use crackers/ketchup on a tray to show the tectonic plates and how they work – may need a map on the IWB showing the plates on a world map. Take photo of cracker tray – children annotate with what the crackers/ketchup represent, what is happening to cause the earthquake. to the children – display the picture on p11/12 to the children and read the picture, jotting down words and ideas the children have. Children to then role play being in that situation – focus on the five senses. Photos to go in books and children to annotate with a speech bubble (Y3) or quote (Y4). 3. What would you save and why: Circle time session to start – discussing what they would save if they had to leave their home in an earthquake. Diamond 9 activity on tables. Give groups 9 post it notes, they choose 9 items to rank in order of importance. They must be able to justify their decisions. Take photo of finished grid to go in books. that are not on the pages. Pull out a verb and children act it out. Discuss what the purpose of the verbs are in a sentence – to describe what a character is doing. Use p16 and p2 – read the pages to the children. What do the verbs tell you about the character’s emotions? Give children copies of the pages – children to highlight the verbs and tell what their interpretation of the verb is. Earthquake aftermath: set up the classroom as though an earthquake had happened. Read p14 to the children describing the bakery. With the children set the scene and describe what can be seen. TiR as Tranio to guide the discussion. Give children post it notes in order to label the space. Children write in full sentences and use – prepositions, adjectives. Take a photo to go in books. 5. Repeated Thought Tracking: read p16 to the children. Discuss the kind of questions Tranio and Liv had – Why questions. Give children a seagull outline, children write 3 why questions on the seagull with the same end line ‘I wish this wasn’t happening.’ St Thomas CE Primary – Narrative Immersion Creative Curriculum Week 4: WB 3/10/16 (p) 2. Volcanoes: show children videos of volcanoes erupting on You Tube, pictures/photos/books. Refer back to the crackers/ketchup from last week and relate to how volcanoes are formed. Volcano Song on You Tube – children create actions to the song. Small diagram of volcano for children to label with vocab from the song. 3. Make a Volcano: use plastic bottle, mentoes, diet coke. Children to ‘build’ a volcano around the plastic bottle. Test the volcanoes – does the order of the ingredients Children make a thought tunnel, T or TA to walk through and children read their poem verse out loud. Take photo for books, put birds on working wall. 1. Hidden Conversation: show children picture on page 18. What are Tranio and Liv saying to each other? Collate ideas on flip chart. Y3 children to write speech bubbles for each character. Y4 to write short conversation between the two characters using correct speech punctuation. (rally coach convo between pairs, act it out etc) (varied openers, adventurous vocab to describe emotions, alternative words for said) 5. Historical Fact Finding: Read p20 to the children describing the eruption. Give children access to information from books, internet, back page about Pompeii and Vesuvius. Video eruptions and take still photos to go in books. 4. And 5 – 3D Volcanoes – two art activities. One large class collage of an erupting volcano (tissue paper, coloured paper. Pva glue, crepe paper etc) worked on a group at a time. Other children sculpting their own volcano out of clay, place on an A4 piece of card on which the children paint the devastation.
