2. Archaeologist Dig: Use last
1.
page of the book. Children look
at the picture as archaeologists
– what can they ‘discover’ on
their dig. What have they
found? Write possible
explanations on post it notes
and stick on enlarged picture.
Add to Working Wall.
3. Newspaper Discovery:
Children to discover a
newspaper article about the
4.
eruption. Children to read it and
highlight/underline key
information and write questions
for what they want to find out
more about. Each child to have
own copy to stick in books.
Archaeologist Artefact
Tray – Show children a
tray full of similar
objects to that found on
the display table. Ask
the children key
questions about what
they can see. Who,
What, Where, When,
Why, How? Scribe ideas

‘person’ from Pompeii

life – jobs,
entertainment, food etc.
Take photos to go in
books.
5. Researching Pompeii: give
children iPads
(Woodlands, Ducksters),
books on Ancient Rome,
Printed information from
Twinkl etc. As
archaeologists we need
to find out more about
this time period with a
focus on food, clothing,
entertainment, jobs,
daily life etc. Create a
class spidergram on the
IWB. Give children time
to do research – find 4
or 5 facts and record in
books. Collate on class
spidergram.
6. Writing Report: Shared
write one paragraph for
a class report. Identify:
subheading, topic words,
factual, no opinion, no I,

(up to p10)
Before the eruption
(key writing skills)
1. Performance Poem: read
p6 to the children. Focus
on the poem and the
word choices made.
Brainstorm words to
describe earthquakes
and feelings around
earthquakes on flip
chart. Show the children
a Michael Rosen
performance on IWB to
show how a poem can be
performed with actions.
Children then work in
small groups to write the
next verse for the
earthquake poem with
actions. Each child to
write one sentence.
2. Composition: Children to
have selection of musical
instruments and compose
an accompaniment to
their performance poem.
Perform poems and film
basic punctuation.
Children then use their
own facts to write one
para for a report.
3. Exploring
Relationships/Role on
the Wall: Outline for
Tranio and Livia. Read p

back to work done in
previous week on
schooling in Ancient
Rome. Gather ideas for
gender roles on the

1. Role Play: read p11 para 1
dice with their dice.
Children swap half way
through session. Take
photos for books (Maths
books too!)
5. Research and Design
Theatre Masks: children
to have iPads and
research ‘Ancient Roman
Theatre Masks’ – look at
features of the masks
and discuss. Children are
to then design their own
mask – think about what
character they are going
to be and how they will
represent this on the
mask (facial expression
and features) Children
need to know they will be
made on paper plates
with junk materials.
6. Making the Masks:
Children have time to
make their masks and
evaluate them. Pictures
to go in books with
evaluation.
6. Verb Hunt: Verbs in a bag

(p11-16)
The Eruption
watch footage of an
earthquake happening on
You Tube, look at
pictures of damage
caused by earthquakes.
Quick class KWL grid on
IWB – ask children to
suggest why/how
earthquakes happen. Use
crackers/ketchup on a
tray to show the
tectonic plates and how
they work – may need a
map on the IWB showing
the plates on a world
map. Take photo of
cracker tray – children
annotate with what the
crackers/ketchup
represent, what is
happening to cause the
earthquake.
to the children – display
the picture on p11/12 to
the children and read
the picture, jotting down
words and ideas the
children have. Children
to then role play being in
that situation – focus on
the five senses. Photos
to go in books and
children to annotate with
a speech bubble (Y3) or
quote (Y4).
3. What would you save
and why: Circle time
session to start –
discussing what they
would save if they had to
leave their home in an
earthquake. Diamond 9
activity on tables. Give
groups 9 post it notes,
they choose 9 items to
rank in order of
importance. They must
be able to justify their
decisions. Take photo of
finished grid to go in
books.
that are not on the pages. Pull
out a verb and children act it
out. Discuss what the purpose
of the verbs are in a sentence –
to describe what a character is
doing. Use p16 and p2 – read the
pages to the children. What do
the verbs tell you about the
character’s emotions? Give
children copies of the pages –
children to highlight the verbs
and tell what their
interpretation of the verb is.
Extension – can the children
suggest alternative verbs?

4. Earthquake
aftermath: set up the
classroom as though an
earthquake had
happened. Read p14 to
the children describing
the bakery. With the
children set the scene
and describe what can be
seen. TiR as Tranio to
guide the discussion.

2. Volcanoes: show children
videos of volcanoes
erupting on You Tube,
pictures/photos/books.
Refer back to the
crackers/ketchup from
last week and relate to
how volcanoes are
formed. Volcano Song on
You Tube – children
create actions to the
song. Small diagram of
volcano for children to

the plastic bottle. Test
the volcanoes – does the
order of the ingredients

read their poem verse
out loud. Take photo for
books, put birds on
working wall.
1. Hidden Conversation:

rest of the group.
St Thomas CE Primary – Narrative Immersion Creative Curriculum
affect the eruption of
the volcano? Video
eruptions and take still
photos to go in books.
4. And 5 – 3D Volcanoes –

large class collage of an
erupting volcano (tissue
paper, coloured paper.
