Genetic Disorders Poster Background To study genetic disorders, it is important to understand that there are different ways diseases can be inherited. Genetic disorders may be autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, X- linked (also called sex-linked), sex-influenced, or a certain chromosome and/or gene is affected – like a missing chromosome, extra chromosome, or a damaged chromosome. Objective: The purpose with this project is to research and organize the information about the following disorders on a poster: Fragile X Syndrome Sickle Cell Anemia Cystic Fibrosis Colorblindness Tay-Sach’s Disease Hemophilia Huntington’s Disease Down Syndrome Procedure: 1. Use your textbook, if applicable, as your first place to do research, THEN check the Internet for additional information. You may work with ONE partner, but each student has his or her own poster. The different types of genetic disorders you are going to research include the following: a. Sex Chromosomes i. Fragile X Syndrome – none b. Autosomal Recessive: i. Cystic Fibrosis – page 345-347 ii. Tay-Sach’s – page 345 c. Autosomal Dominant i. Huntington Disease – page 345-346 d. Codominant i. Sickle Cell Anemia – page 345-348 e. X-linked (sex-linked) i. Hemophilia – page 351 f. Other i. Down Syndrome – page 352-353 Due Date: You will have two days to work on the poster in class. Use your time wisely! You may also work on your project at home; however, the due date is yet to be determined. SET UP YOUR POSTER LIKE THIS: Fragile X Syndrome Type of Disorder Definition (1 sentence) 2 Causes 2 Effects Frequency 2 Treatments 2 Detections 2 Interesting Facts Picture showing disease Cystic Fibrosis Tay-Sach’s Huntington’s Disease Sickle Cell Anemia Hemophilia Down Syndrome Genetic Disorders Poster Grading Rubric PART A: Did you include answers to the following questions FOR EACH DISORDER? (these are additional questions are included to help you with your research; every single question doesn’t have to be answered – just use these questions as a guide) 1. What type of disorder is this? a. Is the disorder sex-linked, autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, codominant, found on the sex chromosomes, or other type of disorder? 2. What is the cause of the disorder? a. How is the disease inherited? Be very specific! 3. What are the effects of the disorder? (include at least 2 effects) a. How does it affect the victim? What is the disorder like – physically, emotionally, and mentally? What problems are associated with the disorder? Is the disorder physically limiting? Is it life-threatening? Is it fatal? Is it found more commonly in certain groups of people (ethnic group, religious group or gender)? 4. What is the frequency of the disorder? a. How many people are afflicted with this disorder? This can be nationally or globally 5. How is the disorder treated? (include at least 2 ways) a. Can the basic defect be treated? Can the signs and/or symptoms of the disorder be treated? Is there a cure? What are some current medical studies concerning the disorder? 6. How is the disorder detected? (include at least 2 ways) a. Can the disorder be detected before its symptoms appear, if so, how? Can it be detected prenatally, and if so, how? Is there any way to detect is a person is a “carrier” of the disorder, and if so, explain. 7. What are 2 other interesting facts about this disorder? a. Include things such as interesting history behind the disorder, or who discovered the disorder? Anybody famous have the disorder? 8. What does this disorder look like? 1. Include a picture of a person with the disorder – showing signs of the disorder. IF the picture does not show visible signs of the disorder, then show an alternative picture, such as an organ that is affected, or a way to treat or detect the disorder. 2. Include a picture to further explain the disorder, such as a pedigree, karyotype or chromosomal map (a chromosomal map is a picture of the chromosome that shows where the problem occurs) PART B: Did you follow other requirements below: Did you use your time wisely during class? Is your poster organized and easy to read? Is your information thorough? Was your poster turned in on the day it was due?
