1. In the election of 1920, Republican candidate Warren Harding’s position
regarding the League of Nations actually helped him win support from people
who believed the United States should join the League and from those who
thought they shouldn’t. How did this happen? In the end what did the U.S. do
with regard to the participation in the League?
2. What were the arguments that were used by the Allied nations with regard to
paying the U.S. the $10.3 billion in war debts? What was the eventual solution?
Identify a potential problem with this solution.
3. Briefly outline the major principles agreed to and the countries involved in the
following treaties.


4. Harding’s position of “Return to Normalcy” was often reflected in the
government retreating from interfering with private enterprise and regulation.
Explain how the Fordney-McCumber Act, the Bureau of the Budget, and the
policies of Secretary of the Treasury, Andrew Mellon reflected Harding’s
position.
5. How were the labor problems in the 20’s similar to those that we discussed during
the Industrial Revolution? Why did labor unions see a decrease in their
membership in the 20’s?
6. Looking at the graph on 716, what conclusions can you make with regard to the
trends in immigration to the U.S. in the 1920’s? After reading, what reasons can you
give to explain these trends? How can these trends be traced back to WWI
propaganda attitudes?
7. How did the Sacco and Vanzetti case symbolize the American mistrust of
immigrants in the 20’s?
8. Why was Harding’s administration wracked with political corruption? What were two
of the biggest examples?
