Before the Romans arrived, the Iberian Peninsula was inhabited by pre-Roman peoples: Celtici, Iberians and colonisers Celtici lived in fortified settlements (castros) Pre-Roman Hispania Iberians lived in walled settlements Greeks and Phoenicians created colonies and factories on the Mediterranean coast Colonisers The Carthaginians entered into conflict with Rome over control of the Peninsula What have we learned? The conquest of the Iberian Peninsula by the Romans began in 218 B.C. Hispania adopted the Roman culture and way of life Roman Hispania The territory was divided into provinces Society was divided into free people and slaves Latin allowed Roman culture to spread throughout the Peninsula The people built amphitheatres, bridges, aqueducts, theatres, etc. The Visigoths arrived on the Peninsula in the 6th century and created the Kingdom of Toledo They installed an elected monarchy Visigoth Hispania There were different social groups: king, nobles and high officials, free men, tenant farmers and serfs Saint Isidoro and Saint Leandro were culturally significant Architecture and jewellery were notable
