JUNIOR FORMAT THE WHOLE ESSAY The Keyhole Approach (see diagram following page) The keyhole diagram, taken from the The Practical Stylist by Sheridan Baker, allows one to visually construct the overall proper format of a formal paper. Title It begins by suggesting that the title of the paper should simply reveal a glimpse of one’s thesis. Introductory Paragraph Next, the beginning or introductory paragraph is written using a funnel style in that the paragraph begins with a broad or general topic sentence that looks forward to the narrow or specific thesis statement found at the end of this paragraph. Thesis Statement The thesis statement is found at the end if this paragraph as it allows the reader to establish his/her bearings here, at the natural conclusion of the paragraph, thereby allowing the reader to easily locate and fully understand the position or argument of the paper. Middle or Body Paragraphs The middle or body paragraphs are full, reflecting ample support of each major idea as well as the diverse use of transitions. Major ideas or arguments are presented from weakest to strongest and each paragraph is clear and coherent. Concluding Paragraph The end or concluding paragraph is written using the inverted funnel format as this paragraph can be seen as the “exact structural opposite and complement of the beginning one” (Sheridan 52). This paragraph begins with the specific thesis statement, reworded. It then develops towards a more broad understanding of this specific statement, ending with the clincher, the final word.
