... of pain, its intensity and the way it behaves over time. However, pain has been considered in terms of three dimensions for many years (see Melzack, 1986; Melzack and Casey, 1968): That is, the sensory dimension as described; the cognitive dimension, which recognises that pain alters our thoughts, a ...

The Future of Smallpox Vaccination - Medical Immunology

... induced by smallpox vaccination has been critical for several recent advances in orthopoxvirus immunobiology – especially since smallpox has been eradicated and other human orthopoxvirus outbreaks are too small and sporadic (e.g. cowpox [34,35] or monkeypox [36,37]) to be feasible for field studies ...

Consistent with prior reports (5), mucosal antibody titers were 1 to 2 logs lower than those found in ...

ADCC_Final Layout.qxd - Autoimmune Disease Research Center

... Autoimmune diseases result from a dysfunction of the immune system in which the body attacks its own organs, tissues, and cells. Physicians and scientists have identified more than 80 clinically distinct autoimmune diseases. Several are well known, including rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, ...

Psychoneuroimmunology

Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI), also referred to as psychoendoneuroimmunology (PENI), is the study of the interaction between psychological processes and the nervous and immune systems of the human body. PNI takes an interdisciplinary approach, incorporating psychology, neuroscience, immunology, physiology, genetics, pharmacology, molecular biology, psychiatry, behavioral medicine, infectious diseases, endocrinology, and rheumatology. The main interests of PNI are the interactions between the nervous and immune systems and the relationships between mental processes and health. PNI studies, among other things, the physiological functioning of the neuroimmune system in health and disease; disorders of the neuroimmune system (autoimmune diseases; hypersensitivities; immune deficiency); and the physical, chemical and physiological characteristics of the components of the neuroimmune system in vitro, in situ, and in vivo.
