... a coupled fiber or integrated waveguide. However, these techniques provide little information about active material parameters under normal PIC operating conditions, and they give no information about the spatial distribution of optical power within each active device. Prior work has demonstrated th ...

... their simple processing. However, regular 400 nm corrugated features are required in DFB lasers. This is a very small length scale – smaller than can be conveniently made by simple photolithography – so holographic techniques are often used. Another option is to use electron beam lithography, but th ...

... The importance of light for mankind is reflected by the tremendous efforts to take control over its creation and propagation. Profiting from the interplay between light and matter, carefully designed optical elements, such as mirrors and lenses, have been successfully employed in the last centuries ...

... Waveguides and optical fibers operate based on the concept of total internal reflection (TIR), where light incident on a surface below a certain angle will be entirely reflected back into the waveguide rather than being transmitted in the surrounding medium. TIR is based on the difference between th ...

Heat sinks can also be included into the FEA model. For example, temperature distribution and deformation in a structure consisting of crystal ...

Retroreflector

A retroreflector (sometimes called a retroflector or cataphote) is a device or surface that reflects light back to its source with a minimum of scattering. In a retroreflector an electromagnetic wavefront is reflected back along a vector that is parallel to but opposite in direction from the wave's source. The angle of incidence at which the device or surface reflects light in this way is greater than zero, unlike a planar mirror, which does this only if the mirror is exactly perpendicular to the wave front, having a zero angle of incidence.
