Optically induced forces in scanning probe microscopy

... theoretical article in 1992 [18], wherein the authors calculated the force on a sphere in an evanescent field from a totally internally reflected wave on a triangular prism. Based on their calculations, Depasse and Courjon concluded that for reasonable excitation intensities, a force should be measu ...

Holographic methods for phase microscopic objects study

... Phase-contrast microscopes are widely used for phase microobjects visualization. But they allow only 2D imaging of the microobjects, measurement of their thicknesses is impossible. Interference microscopes give the possibility of quantitative measurements, but they are mainly used only for thin film ...

Coating Materials - Umicore Thin Film Products

... Magnesium fluoride (MgF2) is still the dielectric material with the highest consumption. This is based on a combination of material properties like low refractive index and film durability. A large area of applications is the refinement of mineral glass lenses with antireflection coatings for consum ...

Laser Ignition in Internal Combustion Engines
Laser Ignition in Internal Combustion Engines

... In the case of thermal interaction, ignition occurs without the generation of an electrical breakdown in the combustible medium. The ignition energy is absorbed by the gas mixture through vibrational or rotational modes of the molecules; therefore no well-localized ignition source exists. Instead, e ...

Harold Hopkins (physicist)

Harold Horace Hopkins FRS (1918–1994) was a renowned British physicist. His Wave Theory of Aberrations, (published by Oxford University Press 1950), is central to all modern optical design and provides the mathematical analysis which enables the use of computers to create the wealth of high quality lenses available today. In addition to his theoretical work, his many inventions are in daily use throughout the world. These include zoom lenses, coherent fibre-optics and more recently the rod-lens endoscopes which 'opened the door' to modern key-hole surgery. He was the recipient of many of the world's most prestigious awards and was twice nominated for a Nobel Prize. His citation on receiving the Rumford Medal from the Royal Society in 1984 stated: ""In recognition of his many contributions to the theory and design of optical instruments, especially of a wide variety of important new medical instruments which have made a major contribution to clinical diagnosis and surgery.""
