Use creative expression to perform a teaching
machine.
Demonstrate understanding of the function of an animal
cell and what each cell part is responsible for.
What is the objective of the integrated activity? Look at connections being made between the two content areas.
Understand how cells work like a machine with different parts working together. They will have performed a
teaching machine to apply their prior knowledge and use creative expression.
What is the question you want the students to be able to answer at the end of this lesson?
How do cell organelles work and allow the whole cell to function?
Materials/Resources
None needed. Video camera/iPhone is optional
Lesson/Activity Description
Students will have prior learning of animal and plant cells and their organelles. I will remind students of how to engage in acting
activities. I will describe to them that they will be working in teams of 2-3 and each group will represent a specific organelle assigned
to them. I will provide an example: mitochondria supplies energy so my actions would represent that. They are then given 5 minutes
practice acting time. Once they complete the pre-work, they will line up perform their function all together. Then I will give them
scenarios of organelles not working and they will act out. They will discuss within their groups how that missing organelle affects the
overall function of the cell. I will also move certain groups around within the cell and they will have to report whether or not that
changes cell function. Optional: record the machine with a video to replay for them in their seats so they can see how they interacted.
