Lesson Title: The Aftermath of the Civil War
Teacher: Mr. Michael Ryia
1. Set Induction:
Whole group discussion on Emancipation Proclamation and the language of the
Constitution whether or not there are slavery implications. We will discuss both sides of slavery
and determine if slavery was constitutional. We will read portions of the Constitution and
determine if such language can be challenged. We will also discuss the role of the Supreme Court
in all instances.

Examine the evolution of the American identity through the eyes of different cultural groups (e.g., African

Objectives: Trace the constitutional controversies of Andrew Johnson’s presidency,
Understand Johnson’s objections to the 14th and 15th Amendments, Evaluate Johnson’s
understanding of the Constitution, explain how Johnson interpreted the Constitution with
respect to restoring the Union after the Civil War
3. Procedures, Assessments and Materials Required:
Students will read together as a class the Andrew Johnson handout and we will answer and
discuss the critical thinking questions. We will discuss how the U.S. changed as a country moving
on from this point and determine the relationships between all parts of government. They will be
put into pairs of 2 to discuss how Johnson was important in restoring the Union.

5. Conclusion/Lesson Wrap-up:
The Class will conclude with a whole group discussion and exit ticket over whether or not
Andrew Johnson’s Reconstruction Plan was a success or a failure. Students will hand in an exit
ticket with a few sentences on why they think he was successful or not.
