E-mail: [email protected] Program Assistant: Carmen Plueger (920-424-1437) Required Texts Supply Chain Management: Strategy, Planning and Operation, 4th edition (2010) by Sunil Chopra and Peter Meindl Velocity by Dee Jacob, Suzan Bergland, and Jeff Cox (note there is an abridged audio version on Amazon that is acceptable as well) Graduate Bulletin Description - BUS 741 Operations and Process Management The operations (production) function of organizations is studied for both manufacturing and non-manufacturing systems (services). A primary focus is on the management of processes used to provide quality goods and services. Topics include the following: a strategic framework to analyze supply chains, designing the supply chain network, planning demand and supply, planning and managing inventories, designing and planning transportation networks, and cross-functional drivers in the supply chain. Prerequisite: All foundation courses. Learning Objectives At the end of this course the students will be able to: 1. Describe specific elements and techniques of quality improvement and explain their impact on an organization’s competitiveness. 2. Construct a material requirements plan. 3. Understand the impact of forecasted future demands on planning and scheduling. 4. Describe forms, functions, and costs of inventory, and techniques for managing inventory. 2 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. Describe various aspects of planning, including aggregate planning, the production plan, and the master production schedule. Understand key elements of Just-in-Time. Describe the process of project management, including planning, scheduling, and control of projects. List the elements of the supply chain, and describe the responsibilities and importance of purchasing. Explain how capacity is checked for sufficiency and actions to be taken if it is not sufficient. Explain concepts/techniques of product, service, and process design. List factors to consider when deciding strategy; describe the components and relationship of quality, productivity, and competitive position. Analyze the impact on industry due to globalization. Relationship of BUS 741 to MBA Program Objectives MBA Program Objective 1: Broad-based knowledge of functional areas in business. Supply chain management and project management are interdisciplinary; therefore, knowledge of supply chain management and project management require knowledge of the functional areas of the business. MBA Program Objective 2A: Effective communication skills, including business writing. The class project, by definition, requires that you perform business writing. You will be required to submit a project proposal and a first draft prior to submitting your final paper. I will provide you feedback to help you learn to improve your business writing. MBA Program Objective 3A: Decision making skills, including identification of business problems. You will have to identify a business problem as part of your project proposal. I will provide you feedback to help you learn how to improve your identification of a business problem. MBA Program Objective 3B: Decision making skills, including qualitative and quantitative analysis of business problems. The class project, by definition, requires that you perform these types of analysis. I will provide you feedback to help you learn to improve your analysis skills. 3 MBA Program Objective 3C: Decision making skills, including development of action plans. You will be required to develop an action plan for your class project. I will provide you feedback to help you refine your action plan. MBA Program Objective 3D: Decision making skills, including implementation of action plans. You will be required to implement your action plan for your class project. I will provide you feedback to keep you on track during implementation of your plan. MBA Program Objective 4A: Interpersonal skills, including working within teams. You may choose to work in a group for your class project. MBA Program Objective 5A: An understanding of current management topics, including global business issues. Supply chain management, ERP, and project management often span country boundaries; therefore, these topics are global in nature. MBA Program Objective 5B: An understanding of current management topics, including ethical principles in business situations. The class readings involve ethical issues. In particular, Velocity and readings concerning supply chain management and project management may include discussions of ethics and/or ethical dilemmas. MBA Program Objective 5D: An understanding of current management topics, including the political, legal, and regulatory environment. The class readings include some discussion of political, legal, and regulatory issues. In particular, the readings concerning supply chain management and project management include this discussion. MBA Program Objective 5E: An understanding of current management topics, including project management. Class readings touch upon project management. In addition, I will provide you with an introduction to critical chain project scheduling. 4 Class Approach 1. 2. 3. 4. This class is instructor led lectures/discussions. There will be some additional documents and other information available on the Desire2Learn (D2L) web site for this class. This will be a very demanding course. The midterm and final exams will be individual exams (open book and open note). The course will also include a discussion on the book Velocity. A class project/research paper is required. Project details are included in a separate handout. At a minimum you are expected to be familiar with means, variances, standard deviations, and the normal probability distribution, including being able to use the standard normal probability table (see pp 342-326 in your book for a review). 6 Course Policies 1. No makeup exams will be given or late assignments accepted unless you provide documentation of a valid excuse to the instructor. It is at the sole discretion of the instructor to allow a make up exam or assignment. Assignments are due by the scheduled date. 2. Students involved in cheating and plagiarism are subject to the maximum penalties permitted by the UW Oshkosh Student Discipline Code. The COBA uses “Turnitin.com” to check papers for plagiarism. All papers, including first drafts, must adhere to plagiarism guidelines. 3. D2L Discussion Format a. For each discussion, you should complete your postings by the end of the day on the due date given. b. Your follow-up responses to other student postings should be more substantial than “Me-too” answers.
