Why do people communicate?
- to
understand and be understood by others
What is communication?
• exchanging
thoughts,
ideas, opinions
• Communication is one of the most important
parts of people´s lives.
• It is a neccessity for everyone.
• People talk to each other every day.
• We distinguish between two basic forms of
communication:
• VERBAL
• NON-VERBAL
Verbal communication
• We use our language (system of words)
to communicate our thoughts and
feelings.
• In vc we use also stress, tone and
modulation of the voice to expess
different meanings
Verbal communication
It includes four skills:
• listening
• Speaking and writing
• speaking
are active because we
create our thoughts in

• reading
• Listening and reading
are passive because we
receive information
Speaking and listening
• Some people are
disabled so they can´t
speak and listen – they
are called the deaf
(deaf-mute )
• They use a special
language – a sign
language
(a movement of hands)
• Listening is vey
important skill when
we learn languages,
not only foreign one
but also a mother
tongue

NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION
• is also called a
body language
• our bodies

• we smile, frawn,
cry, shout, laugh or
move our hands

others face to face.
• It allows the speaker to
ask questions or answer

Ancient forms of communication
• American Indians used smoke signals for
communiction
• African tribes used sound of drums
• Later pigeons were used to carry messages
• In 19th century the telegraph was invented
which is connected with using of MORSE
CODE
Modern ways of communication
• Historically, letters were the only reliable means of
communication until the 19th century
• Besides the invention of telegraph also telephone
(19th century) made communication easier
• Today, the Internet and mobile phones have
become the predominant media in communication
