WEEK 11
This week's lecturers dealt with biotechnology (i.e. modern molecular methods).
You should now be able to articulate on the following:
1) Describe truncation selection.
2) Explain the difference between genetic engineering and standard breeding
programs
3) Explain how the process of recombinant DNA works and how it may be applied
4) Explain how one might produce a transgenic organism
5) Describe the process for studying Short Tandem Repeats and Restriction
Fragment Length Polymorphism’s and how the information from such studies can
be used
6) Describe the process for separating different size restriction fragments
7) Describe a DNA probe and how it is used.
8) Explain the logic underlying Polymerase Chain Reactions (PCR’s).
9) Explain how PCR can be used to solve various ecological and evolutionary
problems.
10) Explain how barcoding works and how it might be applied in conservation
biology.
11) Discuss some potential ethical problems associated with the use of biotechnology
12) Describe stem cells and stem cell technology
