Accentuate the Negative
Welcome to the World of Integers!

about integers
about integers
about integers
Essential Questions:
What are integers and what are their
purpose?
When you subtract two positive
numbers (numbers larger than
zero), it is possible to get an
answer of zero. Zero is
neither positive nor a negative
number.
Integers are a group of numbers that
include positive numbers,
negative numbers and zero.
Integers have no upper bound or
lower bound which means that
range from negative infinity to
positive infinity.
Negative integers are numbers
that are less than zero. Positive
integers are numbers that are
greater than zero.
Real World Examples
Sports – Gain and lose yards
in a football game
Money – deposit and
withdraw money
Weather – Above and below
zero
Geography – Above and
below sea level
The number line is a line labeled with
the integers. Numbers to the right
of zero are positive , and numbers to
the left of zero are negative.
Number Opposites
Name the opposites.
Now let’s try a few numbers.

Accentuate the Negative
Summary for Investigation 1
Answer these questions:
1. How do you decide which of two
numbers is greater when…
1. Both numbers are positive?
2. Both numbers are negative?
3. One number is positive and one
number is negative?
2. What does comparing locations
of numbers on a number line tell
you about the numbers?
