IRREGULAR VERBS
Welcome Class!
I awakeded from bed one day sitted up
and seed a cat. This was not my cat, but it
was the prettiest cat I haved ever seed. I
wanted to play so badly, but the cat frozed
up every time I goed to pet her. I getted it
some water and food and decided I would
just watch it. It eated and drinked
everything I putted down for it. This was
one hungry little cat!

So what is an
IRREGULAR VERB?

Irregular verbs are:
– verbs whose past and past participle tense
forms do not follow the standard rules of
adding –d or -ed to the end but instead have
special forms or spellings.

Simple Past

The simple past tense is expressed with the
past form of the verb and nothing else.
– Examples:
 My grandfather died last year.
(Correct)
 My grandfather was died last year.
(Incorrect)
 My grandfather has died last year.
(Incorrect)
Past Participle

The past participle tense requires both the
past form and one or more helping verbs.
– Examples:
 Andrea had bitten into the chicken before I warned her it
just came out of the oven.
– (had = helping verb; bitten = past participle)
 Once Maria has chosen her little she sends her a letter and
presents.
– (has = helping verb; chosen = past participle)
 I might have slept more if I hadn’t listened to cheerleading
music before bed.
– (might, have = helping verbs; slept = past participle)
Past Participle as Adjectives?

Past participles can serve as adjectives
in sentences, describing other words.
– Examples:
 Kelly found the stolen purse under her friends
floor mat.
 The written speech was easier to correct then the
spoken speech.
