CHAPTER Windows NT Server Installation Chapter Objectives • Give an overview of the installation process • Outline the pre-installation and postinstallation considerations • Provide additional details on the protocols that may be chosen for installation • Describe the step-by-step installation procedure • Relate the installation the three stages of installation procedure defined by Microsoft Chapter Modules • An Overview of Installation Tasks • Pre-installation Considerations • Network Protocols • Installation Overview and Preparation • Gathering Information, Installing Windows Networking and Finishing the Installation MODULE An Overview of Installation Tasks © N. Ganesan, All rights reserved. Module Objective • The generic networking model • Stage at the generic networking model • Installation in perspective • Pre-installation • Network OS installation on the server • Post-installation The Generic Networking Model Stage in Generic Networking Model Hardware Installation Network OS Installation Installation in Perspective • Pre-Installation • NT Server OS Installation • Post-Installation Consideration Pre-Installation • Selection and installation of network hardware • Interface card configuration at the hardware level, if required – IRQ, I/O Address and Memory Address Network OS Installation on the Server • Installation of a server on the network • Covered in this chapter • Post-installation procedures are required for transforming the network into a fully functional network Post-Installation • Managing Domains and Users • Managing Soft Resources • Managing Hard Resources • Managing the Server • Managing the Client Stations • Monitoring and managing the Network Performance END OF MODULE MODULE Pre-Installation Considerations © N. Ganesan, All rights reserved. Module Objectives • Pre-installation considerations • Hardware compatibility • Launching the installation • File systems • Role of the server revisited Pre-installation Considerations • Hardware compatibility • OS launching options • File system details • Role of the server Hardware Compatibility • Processor • Motherboards • RAM uniformity • Display types • Server hard disk – SCSI – Enhanced IDE Hardware Compatibility Cont. • CD-ROM installation and sharing – SCSI CD-ROM – Non-SCSI CD-ROM • Limited support • Sound card • RAID Storage etc. Obtaining a Compatibility List • Network OS literature • Web page of Microsoft • CompuServe forum • Microsoft download Launching the Installation • Floppy disks • Supported CD-ROMs – SCSI – Some IDE • Unsupported CD-ROMs • From a network File System Details • NTFS – Windows NT file system – Use for new NT installations and upgrades as decided • FAT32 – Supported in newer NT and newer Windows 9X • FAT – Install to maintain compatibility with DOS and old Windows operating system Role of the Server • Primary Domain Controller (PDC) • Secondary Domain Controller (SDC) • Stand-Alone Server END OF MODULE MODULE Network Protocols © N. Ganesan, All rights reserved. Module Objectives • Major protocols supported • NetBEUI • NWLINK IPX/SPX • TCP/IP Major Network Protocols • TCP/IP • NetBEUI • IPX/SPX Other Protocols • DLC • Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) • etc. NetBEUI • NetBIOS extended user interface • Standard user interface for LANs of 20 to 200 users • Non-routeable suitable for a single type of network • Purpose: – Communicate with other computers using NetBEUI NWLINK IPX/SPX • For linking and inter-operability with NetWare networks • NetWare access supported – Directories and files – Printers • Essentially a gateway service to NetWare • Suitability – Inter-networking with NetWare networks TCP/IP • Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol • Purpose – Connecting heterogeneous networks • Example – Connecting to the internet END OF MODULE MODULE Installation Overview and Preparation © N. Ganesan, All rights reserved. Module Objectives • Overview of important server installation steps • Launching the installation • Microsoft definition of installation stages • Installation preparation • Minimum hardware detection and configuration • Preparation for installation Overview of Major Server Installation Steps • Launch the installation • Provide file system details • Name the server and select its role • Specify administrator account password • Create emergency repair disk • Select the OS components to be installed Overview (Continuation) • Select and setup the network interface card driver • Select the protocols for installation • Add and install network services • Configure the network adapter with resource values and confirm protocol bindings • Specify server and domain names • Enter date and time properties • Configure the display A Note on Installation Launching Start with Floppy Disks. Load disk drivers etc. Installation Package Continue with the CD-ROM Start installing the NOS. Grouping of the Installation Activities Installation Preparation Actual Network OS Installation Gather information about the computer (server). Install NT networking. Finish setup. Overview of Installation Preparation • Minimum hardware configuration – Initial hard disk and CD-ROM configuration • Minimum driver installation and configuration – NT drivers for hard disk and CD-ROM • Select file type such as, for instance, NTFS • From this point onwards the installation proceeds based on the NT CD-ROM Minimum Hardware Detection and Configuration Partition hard disk using FDISK (Optional). Boot from floppy and load drivers for storage devices etc.. Confirm disks displayed and, if necessary, add other disks attached to the server. Next Preparation for Installation Previous Specify this as a new Installation Optionally choose to examine the hard disk for corruption. Decide on partition and format , either FAT or NTFS. Specify the directory. Restart the computer. END OF MODULE MODULE Gathering of Information, Installing Windows NT Networking and Finishing the Installation © N. Ganesan, All rights reserved. Module Objectives • Collection of information • Initial information gathering • Information of IS components to be installed • Specifying NT networking features • Installing NT networking • Finishing the installation process Collection of Information • Information about the network is gathered • Various identifications • Server type • Administrator account details • Emergency repair disk • Software components to be installed Information Gathering Organization ID/ Serve License/ Computer Name Administrator Ac.
