STD’S BACTERIAL BACTERIAL STD’S 1. Chlamydia (1,030,911) The most common STD Caused by several microorganisms The rates are highest among people 15-19 yrs old 70% of females and 1015% of men have no symptoms HOW IT IS CONTRACTED? • ANAL • ORAL • VAGINAL Symptoms include: • Males: Unusual discharge of fluids from penis Painful, burning, or frequent urination • Females: Vaginal discharge Pain in pelvis Bleeding between periods Affects on baby • • • • Premature delivery Eye infections Respiratory Tract infections Chlamydia is leading cause of infant pneumonia and conjunctivitis Diagnosis/Treatment • A laboratory test diagnoses chlamydia • Antibiotics are used to cure • If left untreated can cause sterility (unable to reproduce) due to scar tissue on either fallopian tubes or vas deferens BACTERIAL STD’S 2. Gonorrhea (700,000) 2nd most common STD Caused by bacteria (warm, moist areas) Usually asymptomatic (without symptoms) Can cause crippling (damage to heart, joints…) How is it contracted • Anal • Oral • Vaginal Symptoms include: • Males: A thick yellowish discharge from penis Burning during urinating 10% of men are asymptomatic • Females: Yellow-green discharge from vagina Abdominal pain Frequent urination, burning during urination 80% of women are asymptomatic Affects on baby • Premature labor • Stillbirth • Permanent blindness Diagnosis/Treatment • • • • Medical testing Examining discharge from penis under microscope Examining culture test of vagina under microscope If left untreated can cause sterility, damage to joints, heart tissue and other organs BACTERIAL STD’S 3. Syphilis (36,000 cases in 2006) Disease caused by bacterium (spirochete) 4 stages If left untreated can cause DEATH How is it contracted? • Anal • Oral • Vaginal Symptoms include 1. 2. Primary stage (10-90 days after contact) Chancre sore on penis/vagina Secondary stage (1-5 months after infection) Joint pain, swollen lymph nodes, nausea, headache, loss of appetite Highly contagious rash Symptoms continued 3. 4. Latent stage (2 or 3 yrs after infection) Symptoms disappear Neurosyphilis stage (years after) Bacteria begins to attack heart, blood vessels, bones, liver, and CNS Can cause blindness and insanity Affects on baby • Congenital syphilis (develops after 5th month of pregnancy) (symptoms begin 3 to four weeks after birth) • Miscarriages more common • Stillbirth more common • Deafness, damage to bone, teeth, and liver Diagnosis/Treatment • A blood test (VDRL) • Some states require this particular blood test before marriage • Penicillin or tetracycline are treatments • Any damage done cannot be reversed-what is done is done
