Carbohydrates
1.
Contains Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen
2. The ratio for these elements are 1:2:1
3. Sugars are examples of Carbs.
4. The three sugars are
• Monosaccharides--Glucose
• Disaccharides--Sucrose
•
Polysaccharides --Glycogen
Ribose is a sugar…
Lipids
1. Lipids also contain Carbon,
Hydrogen, Oxygen.
2. Lipids are different from
carbohydrates because they
contain less oxygen.
3. Examples are Fats, Steroids,
Waxes, Triglycerrides,
Phospholipids
What is a triglyceride?
A fat found in the blood. Most
fat found in the diet and
body fat is in the form of
triglycerides.
What does "ice" have to do with "ice
cream"?
Below is a typical triglyceride butterfat
molecule from which ice cream is made. Ice
cream is formed when many tiny ice crystals
form between the "arms" of the triglyceride
butterfat molecule.

Proteins
1. Contains Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, and
Nitrogen.
2. Amino Acids are the building blocks of
proteins.
3. Proteins serve as structural materials, energy
sources, hormones, and receptors on cell
surfaces.
4. These cell receptors are specialized to bond to
particular kinds of molecules.
5. Make up antibodies and enzymes.
3 Chemical Groups In An
Amino Acid…
1. Amino Group (NH2)
2. Carboxylic Acid Group (COOH)
3. R Group (Specific to Each Type of
Amino Acid)
