Miles Brown is a leading Australian thereminist, composer and sound artist. A student of
Russian theremin queen Lydia Kavina, Brown is best known for his work with Melbourne dark
synth band The Night Terrors, and has also performed with renowned artists such as Lou Reed,
Laurie Anderson, Goblin, Black Mountain and Heirs. Brown's solo material explores the theremin
and synthesiser in the realm of darkwave, gothic disco and ethereal electronics. His debut solo
album Séance Fiction is out now through Death Waltz Originals / It Records.
BIO:
Thereminist and composer Miles Brown was born in Hobart, Tasmania, and cut his creative teeth in the
experimental art / rock scene in Melbourne, Australia. With his band The Night Terrors, Brown has
explored the theremin as a lead instrument in an electronic rock scenario, releasing four albums (The
Night Terrors (2001), Lightless (2002), Back To Zero (2009) and Spiral Vortex (2014)) and touring
through Europe and Australia extensively.
In 2009 Brown received an Australia Council grant to undertake a two month theremin mentorship in
Oxford, UK, with Lydia Kavina, the world’s leading classical thereminist, and grand-niece of Leon
Theremin, the inventor of the instrument. Brown also travelled to the “Without Touch” Theremin Festival
in Lippstadt, Germany, performing alongside great thereminists such as Kavina, Carolina Eyck, and
Barbara Bucholz.
In May 2010 The Night Terrors were invited by Laurie Anderson and Lou Reed to perform at the Sydney
Opera House as part of the Vivid Live festival. Brown was also invited to perform an improvised set live
onstage with Anderson, Reed, Marc Ribot, Ichirou Agata (Melt-Banana), Oren Ambarchi and ZOND.
Brown has also worked extensively with Australian experimental industrial band Heirs, touring Australia
and Europe and contributing to the records Fowl (2010) and Hunter (2012).
In May 2014 Brown was commissioned by the City of Melbourne to compose, record and perform an
album of music for the Melbourne Town Hall’s Grand Pipe Organ. Pavor Nocturnus: Composition for
th
Grand Organ, Theremin, Electronics and Percussion was recorded on Friday the 13 of July and
st
launched on Halloween 31 of October 2014. The album was released by the cult UK label Twisted
Nerve, run by legendary UK producer / music archivist Andy Votel.
Brown has collaborated in the studio with acts such as Sank Otten (DE), Antoni Maiovvi (DE), Harmony
& Don Walker (AU) as well as renowned Australian performer Mikelangelo on his album City of Dreams
(2014). He has also collaborated with the visual artists Monica Zanchetta and Allison Gibbs.
Brown has performed as a guest with acts such as Goblin, Black Mountain, Bardo Pond, Sinoia Caves,
Jason Simon (Dead Meadow), Dan Kelly, Mikelangelo, Silver City Highway and Robbie Avenaim, and
has appeared at the festivals Dark Mofo, Big Day Out, Melbourne Festival, Adelaide Festival, VIVID,
Falls, Queenscliff, Homebake, High Vibes, Festival of the Sun, Melbourne Fringe, Melbourne Music
Week, St. Kilda Festival, Polyhymnia (DE), Incubate (NL), Bracara Extreme Fest (Portugal) and
Denovali Swingfest (DE).
Miles Brown’s debut solo album Séance Fiction was released in December 2015 by Death Waltz
Originals (UK) / Mondo (USA) / It Records (AUS).
