BIOGRAPHY
Born in Namur, Belgium in 1981, Julien Gernay begins a very early study of music. After graduating in
piano and violin from the Conservatoire de Nice, he was unanimously accepted to attend the
Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique de Paris, where he studied with Michel Béroff,
Christian Ivaldi and Daria Hovora. He was awarded with a First Prize for Piano and Chamber Music
and also obtained his higher education degree. Julien has perfomed at various festivals with Dmitri
Bashkirov, Jean-Claude Pennetier, Menahem Pressler, and Janos Starker.
Other awards include, Semi-finalist in the International Piano Competition Queen Elisabeth in 2007,
Lauréat of International Piano Competition of the Vendome Prize in Lisbon, Tarrazi Award and
Drouet-Bourgeois of the Foundation de France Award. He was also a winner of the Foundation
Banque Populaire Group and SingerPolignac Foundation Awards.
His broad success hailed by the press and public allowed him to perform in Paris at Salle Gaveau,
Bouffes du Nord Theater, the Salle Cortot, Unesco, special performance for Nancy Salle Poirel,
Operas in Nice, Bordeaux, Lyon and the Théâtre Molière as well as the Grand Théâtre Royal in
Namur, the Philharmonie in Essen, Germany, the Gulbekian Foundation of Lisbon, Madrid Opera, the
Grand Theatre in Milan , Opéra de Sao Paulo in Brazil, Grand Theatre of Algiers and Ichou Hall and
Asahi Hall in Japan.
Always passionate about the opportunities of new projects and concerts, he was invited to the The
Empéri Music Festival, where he recorded for Radio France in the creation of a Philippe Hersant
piece. Other invitations include: Festival of La Roque d'Anthéron, Festival of Black Périgord, Festival
of Menton, Festival of Wissembourg, Festival of the Vezere and a concert tour with the "New
Virtuosi". He is also regularly invited as a guest for TV and radio shows such as "A perfect Tuesday"
and "In the courtyard of the Great" on France Musiques.
His enthusiasm and experience make Julien Gernay a talented and quite sought after performer for
chamber music ensembles. He has partnered and performed with many musicians including violinist
Nemanja Radulovic, cellists Maja Bogdanovic and Roland Pidoux, trumpeter Romain Leleu and the
Ebene, Modigliani and Szimanowski Quartets.
His discography contains Edvard Grieg’s Second and Third Sonatas in collaboration with violinist
David Galoustov (french label Lyrinx). He has also recorded two CDs for the music label Explora with
the Magellan Trio, Mendelssohn and Composer Roger Steptoe.
