All parties involved in the conflict conceived the other groups neither as an existential threat nor
as inferior to the self. However, forest official perceived the KYWS as a threat to the authority of
the state and forest conservation aims, while the forest contractors understood them as a risk for
their business interests. The population of Dir Kohistan was very distrustful vis-Ã -vis the forest
contractors, which had betrayed them for years, and state authorities, because the military had
