Low phosphorus, restricted protein diet helps manage many kidney conditions.
To help you effectively manage renal failure in your practice, Purina developed NF KidNey Function
brand Canine and Feline Formulas. Available in both canned and dry forms, these excellent diets combine
low phosphorus content with appropriate levels of protein to minimize the signs of renal failure and help
slow the progression of the disease.
®
Chronic renal failure: The most common kidney
disorder in dogs and cats
It has been estimated that 9 out of every 1,000 dogs and 16
out of every 1,000 cats suffer from renal disease. What’s
more, the mortality from kidney disease in dogs is greater
than human mortality from accidents, lung cancer, breast
cancer or AIDS.
• Citrate helps to maintain alkaline urine, appropriate
for managing calcium oxalate urolithiasis
Low phosphorus to compensate for impaired renal
regulation of this mineral
• Appropriate
for managing calcium oxalate urolithiasis
• Evidence shows that controlling serum phosphorus
levels may help slow progression of renal disease
Appropriate protein level to minimize the
formation of uremic toxins
• Research shows that the appropriate dietary
protein levels for animals with renal failure are:
• >10% but <40% for dogs
• > 26% but <40% for cats
• Average percent protein on a dry matter basis
for NF Formulas:
• Canine dry: 15.89%
• Canine canned: 16.50%
• Feline dry: 30.78%
• Feline canned: 31.05%
• NF Formulas:
Non-acidifying to produce a neutral urine pH
• Both feline and canine formulas are non-acidifying diets
formulated to result in a urine pH of 6.7 to 7.5, ad lib
• Helps offset the risk of acidosis associated with
kidney disease
Source of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids
• Fish oil has been added as a source of omega-3 fatty acids
• Omega-3 may help reduce glomerular hypertension,
increase renal blood flow and minimize inflammation
• May help lower cholesterol levels
Added B-complex vitamins
• Extra B-complex vitamins replace those lost during diuresis
High palatability for enhanced patient acceptance
• Helps ensure adequate caloric/nutrient intake, which
is important for patients that are experiencing a
loss of appetite
• Promotes better client compliance
Indications:
• Chronic renal failure
• Feature restricted but high-quality protein sources
• Calcium oxalate urolithiasis
• Minimize the intake of nonessential amino acids
• Early stages of heart disease
• Help ensure adequate energy intake and help
• Hypertension
minimize muscle breakdown
• Hepatic disease associated with encephalopathy
Low sodium to reduce the risk of hypertension
• Sodium restriction has been recommended to help
minimize the risk of hypertension
• Sodium restriction also helps compensate for the sodium
retention often associated with heart conditions
Added potassium citrate to compensate for
excessive urinary loss
•A
n optimum potassium level helps reduce the risk of hypokalemia associated with kidney failure
Low phosphorus, restricted protein diet
helps m an age m an y kidn ey conditions.
