Renal Disease

Significant clinical symptoms don’t generally occur until the % of nephrons functioning drops to
at least 30% (likely lower)
Canine/Feline Renal Support
Indications:
 Patients in need of renal support as indicated by BUN, creatinine, phosphorus, and urine specific gravity values
 Age-related renal changes
 Renal injury/toxic insult
 Hepatic patients in need of additional hepatic support
 Chronic inflammation
o Cystitis
o FLUTD
o Crystalluria/Urolith formation
o FUS
Systems Supported:
Kidneys
Liver
Vasculature
Bone Marrow
Heart
Thyroid
Autonomic nervous system
Clinical goals:
 Goal is to normalize all aspects of urinary function
 In most cases, supplements can be given alongside conventional medications
 All conditions exhibiting renal compromise may need long-term support
 Caution in compromised animals
 Kidney – one of the primary excretion routes
 Can see detoxification reactions
 Start conservatively, especially in older or very compromised animals

Early intervention has the best prognosis
Ingredients:


Bone meal – ca, p, connective tissue support, intrinsic factors of bone marrow
Spleen – SOD, rich iron source, reticuloendothelial system, antioxidant, immune system support
Duodenum – supports nutrient absorption by supplying digestive intrinsic factors specific to the
SI/duodenum
Buckwheat – rich source of bioflavonoids, quercetin, Vit C and trace minerals, impt. For vascular
integrity
Indian gooseberry - rich source of bioflavonoids and Vit C
Pea vine juice –– rich source of whole vit E complex. Benefits seen with high blood pressure, heart
worm disease, high blood cholesterol and triglycerides or other heart ailments. Increased dietary
polyunsaturated fatty acids increase the need for vitamin E.
RNA – Opens capillary beds, supports improved microcirculation, supports cell reproduction, thyroid
function
Silybum marianum – contains flavanolignans (collectively known as silymarin) which are some of the
most potent liver-protecting substances known. Stabilizes liver cell membrane against injury, assists in
cellular regeneration, supports liver detoxification processes.
Alfalfa juice – trace minerals, vitamins, and amino acids
Kidney bean extract – supports arginase fxn in kidney – helpful in renal congestion (arginine buildup –
from protein metabolism)
Mushroom – rich source of vitamin C complex, for connective tissue health, vascular integrity,
antioxidant,
healing/regeneration
Beet leaf juice – betaine HCl – lipotrophic agent impt for liver/gall bladder health, - Beets are loaded
with
A, B1, B2, B6 and C. They are also an excellent source of calcium, magnesium, copper,
phosphorus, sodium and iron.
Carrot powder – vitamin A complex source, beta-carotene, trace minerals, carotenoids

SP Human Products:
Arginex uses: “gum-out” for kidneys need shown by: cells, casts, albuminuria in UA. Decreased SG, failure to
concentrate, body odor, liver disease, enlargement, decreased urination,
Contains arginase, impt for metabolizing urea for excretion. Elimination of toxins and influencing the osmotic
transfer of tissue fluids (edema).
Liver and kidney support
Add to any liver case
Dosage: 4/3/2
Albaplex – for worst kidney cases (cancer), cystitis, renal/liver support.
 Contains:
o Kidney bean extract
o Betacol – liver
o Renatrophin PMG
o Renafood
o Choline – lipotrophic
o Cataplex AC – healing
o Arginex
o Thymex
 Dosage: 3/2/1
Renatrophin PMG – for any urinary problem
 Fluid balance (also tx adrenals)
 BP changes
 Toxemia
 Anemia (seen in chronic nephritis)
 Dosage: 4/3/2
Renafood – (Renatrophin PMG + Arginex)
 Renal hypertension
 Edema
 General renal support
 Renal protein overload
Contains:
o Arginex – decongest, detoxify, ‘gum out’ for the kidneys
o Cataplex ACP – healing
o Chlorophyll – detox/healing
o Betacol – liver
o Cataplex G – b vitamin effects on cell proliferation
o Cataplex F – EFA to enhance calcium utilization
 Dosage: 4/3/2
AC Carbamide
 Works well with Arginex
 Osmotic diuretic
 Helps detox a sluggish liver by flushing the route of elimination through the kidneys
 Of greatest value in toxic cases where body is holding excess water
 ‘The solution to pollution is dilution.’
Indications:
 Kidney-bladder symptoms – natural diuretic








Water balance
Sweat gland activity (unexplained)
Acidosis
Gastritis – ulcers, epithelial lining problems
Allergic reactions – bee stings, asthma
o Due to kidney backup and hyperalkalinity
o Add Cal-Amo
Local applications – poultice for weeping lesions
Glaucoma
Urinary burning
o Arginex
o AC Carbamide
