It is estimated that up to 10% of infants will continue to react
to extensively hydrolysed formulas. Amino acid formulas
especially useful in patients with non-IgE mediated food
entercolitis/proctitis syndromes with faltering growth, severe
atopic dermatitis and symptoms during exclusive breast
feeding. A major hurdle in the use of hypoallergenic formula
is their poor taste, this is less of an issue for infants under 6
months of age with a relatively “naïve” taste repertoire,
(Skypala, 2009).
Weaning on the Milk Free Diet
General weaning advice applies see Section 5 for more
detail.Infants need around 600ml or 20floz of milk substitute
per day to get enough calcium. This can be mixed with
cereal or can be used in adapted recipes for custard and
white sauce.
