Shadblow Serviceberry
Amelanchier canadensis
Description: A spectacular small tree or shrub with interest in every season. Spreading by sucker growths from
the base it is multi-stemmed by nature. A great native habitat tree.
Mature height: to 20’
Leaves: 2” long, turning yellow & gold with some orange & red in autumn. Clean Summer foliage.
Bark: Smooth, light gray.
Flowers: Spectacular white flowers about one week later than the Downy Serviceberry, A. arborea, sweet juicy
fruit.
Habitat: Hardy zones 4 to 9. Prefers moist soil and can be found in the wild near water from Maine to South
Carolina. Easily grown in full sun to part shade.
Fun Facts: The small, showy red berries attract birds and are safe for human consumption. Also known as
Shadbush because fishermen use its blooming as an indicator of when the Shad run.
