Unit 1 Project-Pompeii
Due Friday, Nov. 8th
Goal: To learn the effect a major volcanic eruption has on earth’s surface and the people
who live there.
Standard: S6E5 Students will investigate the scientific view of how earth’s surface was
formed.
e. Recognize that lithospheric plates constantly move and cause major geological
events on the earth’s surface
f. Explain the effects of physical processes (plate tectonics, erosion, deposition,
volcanic eruption, gravity) on geological features including oceans (composition,
currents, and tides)
g. Describe how fossils show evidence of the changing surface and climate of the earth
Assignment: You choose on of the following activities to complete
1. Write a diary from the perspective of someone living in Pompeii before, during, and
after the eruption. Include at least 5 diary entries.
2. Draw Pompeii during the volcanic eruption.
3. Write a poem about how you would feel looking at the destruction in Pompeii after
the volcanic eruption.
4. Create a diorama of how the town of Pompeii looked before and/or after the eruption
Students will have some class time to work on their project and do research using the
school computers, but they should be prepared to complete the majority of the project at
home. Students creating a diorama will have to provide their own materials.
Rubric: Each of the four assignment choices has a different rubric to go with it. I will
allow students to look over the rubrics in class and I will post them all on the web page
for parents to view. Once you have chosen which project you are completing, I will give
you the appropriate rubric.
