4.G.1
These are the skills your child must be fluent in to be able to have success in the upcoming grade.
Fluencies;
1) All 4th graders must be able to fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
*What this means is that every student must be able to add and subtract numbers that have more than 1 digit
using the standard form of addition and subtraction. No support items like fingers, number line,
calculator, or any other type of support. Only use a pencil and paper.
Example:
298
+ 43
1,354
+2,698
3,509
-1,685
217
- 59
2) All 4th graders must be able to solve multi-step word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole number answers using
the four operations.
*What this means is that students must be able to use any combination of the four mathematical operations
(addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division) to solve word problems that require more than one
operation to find a solution.
Example: Jason went shopping and bought an iPod for $25.50, a pair of earphones for $13.75, and
an iTunes card for $30.00. When he got home he had $10.45 left. How much did he
have when he first went shopping?
Items with a * are those directly related to the “Fluencies” for 4th Grade.
4th Grade students must practice problems with these “Fluencies” to become more proficient.
Tutorial of some skills:
1. Area model with multiplication;
23 x 45
20
30
3
30 x 20
30 x 3
600
4
2. Area model with division:
600
90
80
+ 12
782
90
4 x 20
4x3
80
12
So,
23 x 45 = 782
245 ÷ 5
5
20
20
+ 9
49
20
20 x 5=100
100
20
20 x 5=100
100
9
9 x 5=45
So, 245 ÷ 5 = 49
+ 45
245
3) Decompose fractions:
To decompose fractions means to take them apart and show them in a different way.
Example:
5
7
=
1 1 1 1 1
+ + + +
7 7 7 7 7
