GIANT CELLS ANALOGY PROJECT
TASK: Come up with a complete analogy to a cell that can help you understand that
cells are just like any other system that has parts that work together to accomplish a
task.
REQUIREMENTS:
1. Cell analogies must include the following structures:
o Cell wall (plants only)
o Cell membrane
o Nucleus
o Ribosomes
o Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
o Mitochondria
o Chloroplasts (plants only)
o Vacuole
o Golgi Complex
2. Each structure must be represented by a picture or drawing.
3. Each structure must be labeled with its structure name and its analogous system
name.
4. Each structure must include two descriptions
Description 1: its function in the cell
Description 2: its function in the analogous system
5. Your model must be labeled with your name, period, and what your cell is like.
EXAMPLE OF REQUIREMENTS 2-5:
(2) Draw a little fence around the edge of your “cell”.
Label it with…
(3) Cell Membrane/Factory Walls, Floor and Ceiling
(4) Function as part of the cell: Protective barrier that encloses a cell, separating the
cell’s contents from the environment. Allows nutrients and water to move into a cell
and wastes to move out of the cell.
(4) Function as part of the factory: Protective barrier that encloses the factory,
separating the factory’s property and workers from the public. It only allows people
with particular factory business to pass into and out.
(5) Your first and last name

Analogy – a comparison of similar things – in this case, things with similar functions.
Analogous Part – Part that has a similar function to the organelle in the cell.
