Cell Analogy Worksheet
Analogy- drawing a comparison in order to show a similarity in some respect; "A CPU is to a computer
as a brain is to the human body.”
Part One: Building AnalogiesYou will create an analogy showing the similarities between a plant or animal
cell and something else. Your options include:
A City/Town
A School
A Sports Team
The Mall
1. Which type of cell would you like to use – a plant cell or an animal cell?
______________________________
Why would a prokaryotic cell be difficult to use to make an analogy?
___________________________________________________________
2. Which analogous construct will you choose – the city, school, sports team, or mall?
___________________________________________________________
3. Complete the chart “Cell Analogy” to show how your analogy would work.
a. Fill out the titles of the chart with your type of cell and analogous structure.
b. Pick 8 organelles found in your type of cell. (Two have been selected for you.)
c. Explain very clearly their specific job in your type of cell
d. Next, think about a part/person in the “analogous construct” you chose in #2 that performs the same
function/role as that organelle. Write the part/person who performs the same job in the column labeled
Analogous Part/Person.
e. Finally, write an explanation for HOW that part/person performs the same function/role/job in the Reason
column. This explanation is VERY important. Show clearly that you have chosen that part/person for a
reason (and explain that reason in a clear, readable way)!
