Pressure Changes in the Heart: Question Sheet
What is the heart rate in beats per minute?
At point A, why does the atrial pressure have a slight rise?
Why does atrial pressure decrease again 0.1s later?
At point B, why does atrial pressure show an increase?
At point B, why does ventricular pressure show an increase?
Why is this increase less than at point D?
Why is pressure highest in the ventricles during ventricular systole than in the atria
during atrial systole?
Draw a sketch graph to compare pressures in the left and right ventricles during the
cardiac cycle
Describe which chamber (atrium or ventricle) has a higher pressure at each stage of
the cardiac cycle
What happens if the pressure if higher in the ventricles than in the atria. At what
stage of the cardiac cycle does this happen?
At point D, what happens to the ventricular pressure on the left side of the heart?
About 0.1 seconds later, what is the effect of this on the semi-lunar valves? During
what part of the cardiac cycle does this happen?
Why does aortic pressure continue to decrease for about 0.1 seconds even though
ventricular systole has started?
