The Air Around Us
1) Wind:
*The moving air is called wind.
*Winds are very important for life on Earth.
*They blow clouds over the sea where they pick up
moisture .
*These clouds are then driven by winds over the
land, where they bring much needed rain during the
monsoons.
2)Atmosphere:
*The Earth is covered by a huge blanket of air
is known as Atmosphere.
*It extends to about 200kms above the
surface of the Earth.
3)Layers of Earth:
The atmosphere has 5 different layers. They
are:The troposphere
The stratosphere
The mesosphere
The thermosphere
The exosphere.
4)Troposphere:
*The troposphere is the layer closest to the
Earth.
*It is the layer in which we live.
*It extends upwards for upto 16kms above the
surface of the Earth.
*Formation of clouds and weather changes
takes place in this layer.
5)Stratosphere:
*It lies above the troposphere.
*This layer has the ozone layer in it.
*The ozone layer protects all life on Earth from
the harmful rays of the sun.
6)Mesosphere:
*Mesosphere is the 3rd layer of the atmosphere.
*It is the coldest layer.
*Meteors burn in this layers.
7)Thermosphere:
*This layer very thin and hot.
*Satellite move in their corresponding orbit in
this layer.
8)Exosphere:
It is the uppermost layer of the atmosphere and it
leads to open space.
9)Components of air
10)Nitrogen:
*It is the major component of air (78%).
*Nitrogen is used to make fertilizers to crops.
*Plants need these nitrogeneous substance to
grow better.
*All proteins contain some amount of nitrogen in
them.
*All living things need protein for their growth.
11)Carbon-di-oxide:
*CO2 is presented in very small amount in
the atmosphere.
*Plants need this gas to prepare food.
*CO2 traps the heat from the sun and
helps to keep the Earth warm.
12)Oxygen:
*O2 is the other major gas present in air.
*It makes up about 21% of air.
*It is essential for life.
*Living organisms breathe in O2.
*In the body, it helps convert the carbohydrates
and fats we eat into energy.
*O2 is needed for burning-without it, there
would be no fire.
13)Pollution:
The addition of substances to the environment in
quantities which are harmful for living beings is known as
pollution.
