Aztec Artifact Project
YOUR TASK
You are to choose one of the following artifacts connected to Aztec history to recreate and research further.
Your visual project should be accompanied by a short piece of writing (no more than one page, double spaced),
and should answer the following questions:
1. What about this artifact is significant to Aztec culture?
2. How was this artifact used by the Aztecs in their daily life? Who used it?
3. What does this artifact tell us about Aztec worldview?
Your project should be completed neatly, and you are expected to complete your own research on your
chosen artifact using credible sources (these could include books, textbooks, or credible websites).
YOUR OPTIONS
Diorama or Model
Construct a diorama or model of an example of Aztec architecture. Your diorama or model could be of a house,
a temple, a marketplace, or another part of the village. You should be prepared to explain what part of the
village your model is of, and why it is an important part of the Aztec lifestyle. (If you decide to create a part of
the village not listed here, please check with your teacher before proceeding).
Floating Garden
Create your own version of a chinampa, or floating garden. Your chinampa should be detailed, and represent
the crops that the Aztecs grew. Your paragraph should include information about what crops you chose to
represent, and why they were important to the Aztecs.
Folding Codex
Create a traditional Aztec accordion codex, or book, that details an Aztec myth of your choosing. Your codex
should be in colour, and your paragraph should detail why you selected this myth and why it is a significant story
for the Aztec people.
Map
Design a detailed map of the city of Tenochtitlan. Please make sure to include causeways, floating gardens,
temples, and buildings. Your map should be in colour, and should look as though it is a historical piece.
Timeline
Make a timeline of at least ten important events that happened during the Aztec period. Be sure to label each
event with a date and description of what happened and why the event was significant, and include a picture to
go along with each event.
Religious Ceremonies Skit (Group Option)
Research a type of religious ceremony that was conducted by the Aztecs. You are to then create a short skit
demonstrating how the religious ceremony would be performed, with a written script, props, and costumes.
