Introduction
Long ago in Ancient China, education was very respected and important. But soon there was a
stop to change in the importance of education. This was due to the orders of the First Emperor,
Qin Shi Huang. He demanded that educating should come to an end. HE believed that
educated people can create ideas that are different from his. He felt threatened by this and so
got rid of any one who was a scholar or smarter than him. He believed that uneducated people
like the peasants were easier to control.

Emperor Qin’s

The building of the Great Wall
Many people today still believe that although Emperor Qin was a cruel leader, he united China
in many ways. Long ago he forced people to build the Great Wall. Even though it meant losing
family members for many peasants and slaves. He didn’t show any consideration or kindness
towards his own people. Building the great wall was considered torturous to many. It killed
thousands of people.
Now it is considered one of the greatest man made structures in the world. It protects parts of
China. Before Emperor Qin united China, there were lots of invaders and Emperor Qin thought
this was a good way to keep out and protect China

What was school like during Ancient China?
There were private schools and international schools during that time and the subjects they
were learning are very similar what is being taught today. The subjects they learned are: Math,
Science, Mandarin, Art, Physical Education, and so forth. Back in those days, families did not
place their children in class until the age of 6 or 7. If they were lucky they would be able to
continue to middle school otherwise they had to go out and work. Also one thing that has
changed is that students were required to go to school for 5 and ½ days to school as oppose to
us where we only attend school for 5 days. One thing that hasn’t changed is that every
morning the whole school is required to stand in rows and sing their national anthems and do
morning exercises.

Did Everyone Have The Same Opportunities?

Exam Results
Education was important in Ancient China. Boys went to school at about 7 years old. Girls
were not usually sent to school. Instead, they learned how to spin and weave. They also helped
their mothers at home. Kids who were good scholars were sent to college. Very few of the
students passed the examination and became a government official and brought wealth/honor
to their family. Most schools worked this way: Elementary School–6years Middle School–3
years College-based on Exam results. So boys and girls didn’t have the same opportunities,
and the unfair part is that the boys had way more good opportunities than girls.

How did Math Work in Ancient China?
More than 3,000 years ago, in Ancient China, the systems of the numbers were expanded for
practice reasons. Astronomers needed a way to record their chemical formulas, so they used
math to calculate the length the lunar month/year. Surveyors and builders depended on math
too! They needed to know the amount of materials they needed for a project using math
calculations and estimations. People used an abacus to figure out the answers of their math
questions, which is similar to calculators we use now. So they had a different way to figure out
answers to their questions they needed to solve.
