Unit 4 Study Guide
What is successful reproduction?
Successful reproduction is a species ability to reproduce the best offspring (genetically) and for the offspring to live
and reproduce on their own
What are the characteristics behaviors animals display to increase their chances of successful reproduction? Provide
examples.
1. Dancing – Blue footed Bobby and the Peacock Spider
2. Fighting – male deer, hooded seals
3. Color – males attracting females, females being camouflaged (cardinals and peacocks)
4. Mating Calls – gorilla chest pounding
5. Nest building – alligators, birds, squirrels
The only way a population increases is by……..
The amount of offspring reproduced to be larger than the dying population
What are the ways plants increase their chances of successful reproduction?
1. Colorful petals attracting pollinators
2. Having both male and female parts
3. A variety of anthers for different pollinators
4. Pollen located in an easy access location
What are the four things organisms need in order to survive and thrive?
1. Food
2. Water
3. Space (shelter)
4. Light
What are environmental factors?
Factors from the environment that impact the organism’s ability to grow and thrive. Examples: Drought, space in
habitat, temperature, increase in population
What are genetic factors?
Genetic factors are factors that are related only to organism’s genes they pass. These give the organism their size,
color and behavior.
What are some ways plants can be impacted by environmental factors?
Drought causes plant to not grow as well due to lack of water for photosynthesis. Human population increasing leads
to deforestation. Bee populations decreasing causes less pollinators
What are some ways plants can be impacted by genetic factors?
A miscoded gene may make a petal a color that doesn’t attract a pollinator. It also could impact root growth or the
ability to handle sudden change in temperatures.
What are some ways animals can be impacted by environmental factors?
Habitat loss, weather conditions, pollution, temperature change, increase/decrease in predators.
What are some ways animals can be impacted by genetic factors?
Poor environmental conditions can lead to sick parents and make sick offspring. An albino animal being born in a
non-arctic area will increase its chances of not surviving. Diseases spreading.
What are some ways humans can help animals whose populations are decreasing?
Limit the amount of habitat we are taking away. Pollution for plants so animals have a food source.
