Week 2 Notes
Parts of a Sentence
Subject: The “who” or “what” performing the action in a sentence.
To find the subject, ask:
Who/what is the sentence about?
Who/what completes the action?
Example of Subject:
Jane walked down the street.
Predicate: The verb (action) that the subject performs.
Example of Predicate:
Jane walked down the street.
Direct Object: A noun or pronoun that receives the action of the verb.
Example of Direct Object:
They launched the ball over the fence.
She gave the food to the dog.
Indirect Object: The person/thing that something is given to/ done for.
An indirect object:
Answers the question “to whom?” or “for whom?”
Will always be a noun or pronoun
You can’t have an indirect object without a direct object!
Examples of Indirect Object:
We will make him an offer.
The attendant gave Robert some water.
Object of Preposition: the noun or pronoun that comes after a preposition. Remember, a preposition links a
noun or pronoun to other words in a sentence.
Examples of Object of Preposition:
The book is on the table.
Katherine arrived with Charlotte.
