Prepositions and Prepositional Phrases
Phrase – Group of words
Prepositional Phrases = Preposition + Object of a Preposition (noun or pronoun)





A preposition is a position word showing a (relationship) of one object to another.
Slot test = The bird flew ___________ the clouds. (The slot test determines the possibility of a
word being a preposition. )
In order for it to be a preposition, it must be followed by an object of a preposition, a noun or
pronoun which answers the question who or what following the prep.
Examples: I went by the store. By what? The store. By the store is a prepositional phrase.
Practice: From the dark of the night came the screams of the young girl. What are the preps?

Verbs
Verb (V) – indicate tense (past, present, future); actions or state of being


Verbs drive your writing!
What is the difference from using fell vs. cascaded? Walked vs. ambled?
EX. I jumped over a toad and landed on a frog. Our teacher gave us a huge test today.
Subjects
Subjects (S) – who or what (and completes the verb after prepositions are eliminated)


They always indicate number (singular/ plural.)
Should always match the verb! This is called subject-verb agreement!
EX> He went to the movies without you. Maria is a wonderful host.
