1. What is a gene?
-Genetic information in DNA. Genes come in pairs from both parents.
2. What is a mutation? Why is it important? What can cause it happen?
-Mutation are changes in the DNA. It can lead to adaptations. Environmental agents/Mutagenic agents. Could be nuclear radiation.
Extreme temperatures too hot or too cold. Chemical exposure.
3. What are some examples of ways chromosomes mutate?
-Reversal, Deletion, Duplication and Replacement.
4. Do some research, how can a transgenic organism be used?
-To create complex proteins. It can help substitute parts of the body. It could increase the production speed of plants. Could be used
for experimentation in labs.
5. It is estimated that every human carries between 5 and 8 harmful genes. Why do you think that more people are not born with inherited
diseases?
-The genes are recessive meaning they aren’t active.
6. Research the Human Genome Project. What is it? What is it’s purpose? How can it help?
-The HGP is the science research project where they use human DNA to identify and map of all the genes. It can help us to find
mutations and help us to solve genetic problems
7. Research transgenics: what are some human proteins that can be produced by bacteria?
-EC is a bacteria that makes human insulin.
8. Research transgenics: what are some human proteins that can be produced by cows , sheep or pigs?
-Milk containing Lactoferrin, therapeutic
9. Why do you think that bacteria is used for some but not for all proteins?
-I think that some bacteria cannot make proteins because they are too small. Some bacteria can cause mutations.
