Tips for Completing Exercise Technique Labs Movement, Observation, Validate, Educate (M.O.V.E.) 1) MOVEMENT: Identify the plane of motion and the prime movers for the exercise. View the exercise technique video to determine the major joint actions involved in the exercise. Determine the plane of motion for the joints involved in the exercise by looking at Figure 1-1 in Chapter 1: Human Anatomy of ACE’s Essentials of Exercise Science Manual. For more specific details on planes of motion, look at Table 3-1 Fundamental Movements (From Anatomical Position) in Chapter 3: Fundamentals of Applied Kinesiology of ACE’s Essentials of Exercise Science Manual. Decide which muscles act as primary movers. To do this, locate the appropriate table in Chapter 1: Human Anatomy of ACE’s Essentials of Exercise Science Manual. The table lists the major muscle groups that act at each joint and provides information on muscle origin and insertion, primary function, and selected exercises. Before moving on to step 3, carefully read the text section that corresponds with the table content in the chapter. The text will provide information about which muscles act as prime movers and assistors. In other words, the table will list possible joint actions of specific muscles, but it may not indicate whether or not that muscle is a prime mover for the joint action. 2) OBSERVATION: Where should you focus your attention when watching a client perform this exercise? Determine where you should focus your attention when watching a client perform this exercise by watching the exercise technique video and listening to the explanation of proper execution of the exercise in the video. You may also read the transcript of the exercise technique video by clicking on the link provided below the video picture. This response should focus on specific details for proper exercise technique that will guide an exerciser to perform the movement safely and effectively. 3) VALIDATE: Which joints are moving during this exercise? Which joints should not move during this exercise? Determine which joints should move and which joints should not move during this exercise by watching the exercise technique video and listening to the explanation of proper execution of the exercise in the video. You may also read the transcript of the exercise technique video by clicking on the link provided below the video picture. This response should provide information on which joints are mobile during the exercise and which joints are stable during the exercise. In many cases, only one or two joints are mobile and all other joints should maintain their neutral, stable positions. In these instances, it is acceptable to indicate the mobile joints and then finish with a statement such as, “all other joints should remain stable during the execution of the exercise.” 4) EDUCATE: What are the primary cues a trainer should use for this exercise? Determine the primary cues a trainer should use for this exercise by writing about the specific details for proper exercise technique that will guide an exerciser to perform the movement safely and effectively (the same information you provided earlier in the Observation portion of this assignment). However, the difference between the responses for Observation and Educate is that the education response should be written in the form of statements that the trainer can use to coach the client to perform the exercise properly. These statements should be geared toward helping the average client who doesn’t understand anatomical terminology position his or her body correctly and perform the exercise using good form. The proper use of quotation marks is required.
