Instructions for “Application: Sidewalk and Painting Incentive Program”
Applicants must be paid-up members of the Schenectady Stockade Association (Association) at the time
that painting or sidewalk repair is completed. Residents of the Stockade Historic District, owners and
renters, may join the Stockade Association.
The Association will consider only one application, for a painting or a sidewalk project but not both, per
valid Association membership (individual or family) per year.
A limited amount of money is budgeted for this program, and is awarded at the discretion of the Board
of Directors.
Painting Incentives are awarded as reimbursement to help defray the costs of painting building exteriors
that are readily visible from the public right-of-way. Paint colors must be approved by the Historic
District Commission. An award is a dollar amount up to 50% of actual painting costs, and shall not
exceed $500.
Sidewalk Incentives are awarded as reimbursement to help defray the costs of repairing or replacing
damaged sidewalks on the public right-of-way. All repairs must use bluestone, brick, or appropriately
tinted concrete. Blacktop repairs are not allowed in the historic district and cannot be reimbursed. An
award is a dollar amount up to 50% of actual repair costs, and shall not exceed $500.
The Historic District Commission must pre-approve any exterior painting or sidewalk work to be done
in the historic district. Commission approval must be received by the applicant before the Stockade
Association will consider an application for this incentive award. A copy of the Commission approval
must be attached to this application. The Historic District Commission meets every month to review
such projects. A separate application must be filed with the Commission at least two weeks prior to its

Timing: Application must be submitted no later than April 20 in the fiscal year that the work will be
completed. The Association fiscal year begins October 1 and ends September 30 of the next calendar
year. The Stockade Association will review and approve applications at its May meeting. Applications
submitted after April 20 will be considered only if the budgeted funds have not already been allocated.
Work must be complete on or before September 30 following the date of application. Payment will be
disbursed for an approved application when the work is complete, there are no pending items on the
application, and the applicant submits proof of successful completion consisting of “before” and “after”
photos and supporting receipts for the work.
