Viewpoint,discourse,andmultimodalartifacts BarbaraDancygier CognitiveLinguisticshasbeenmovingtowardsabroaderrecognitionofthewaysin whichlanguageandwell-knownmeaning-emergencemechanismsareinteracting withothermeaningfulchannels.Whiletheroleofgesture,eye-gaze,andother embodiedchannelshasbeenthefocusofmuchresearchthesedays,theinterestin theinteractionbetweenlanguageandvisualimagesisstillcarvingoutanichefor itself.Thestudyofcommunicationusingimagesaswellaslanguage,whichIreferto as‘theothermultimodality’,isimportant,especiallyasawaytoconfirmbroader mechanismsofmeaningconstruction. Inthistalk,Iwillconsiderseveraltypesofartifacts,firstofallinternetmemesand advertisingcampaigns,toshowhowthesemultimodalcommunicativecontextsrely onexpressivetoolsfamiliartoallcognitivelinguists–constructions,metonymy, imageschemas,etc.Iwillalsoshowhowviewpointworksasanoverarching category,givingcoherencetoarangeofexpressivechoices.Further,Iwillarguethat meaningconstructionmechanismsremainlargelysimilaracrossmodalities,but linguisticformsadjusttothenewmediainwaysthatconfirmsomeofourgeneral beliefsabouthowlanguageworks.
