Organic Compounds
Picture Vocabulary
Matter and Energy
Atom
The smallest particle of an element maintaining
the chemical identity of that element.
Element
A pure substance composed of
the same type of atom throughout.
Compound
Pure substance made of two or more
kinds of atoms bound together.
Carbon
A naturally occurring element of Earth, and
essential building block of organic compounds.
Organic Compound
A compound that contains organic carbon and
other atoms, usually oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen,
phosphorus, and/or sulfur.
Inorganic Compound
Does not contain the carbon-hydrogen atom
combination that characterizes organic
molecules; not of biological compounds.
Carbohydrates
Molecules containing carbon, hydrogen, and
oxygen that break down into simple sugars.
Proteins
Large complex molecules containing carbon,
hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, and sometimes
sulfur that break down to amino acids.
Amino Acid
An organic compound, one of
twenty building blocks of protein.
Lipids (Fat)
Organic carbon-based substances, such as
fat, oil, or wax, that dissolve in alcohol, but not
in water; an important part of living cells.
