Spores are largely produced by species of
Clostridium and Bacillus. A few other Gram
positive organisms also produce spores (e.g.,
Sporosarcinae).
Peptidoglycan is synthesized between
the two layers of the double membrane to
produce the cortex which protects the spore against
changes in osmotic pressure
