Cell Simile Project
Analogy Goal:
I can compare cells and their organelles to something else in the world.
Standard:
7.3.1 - Explain that all living organisms are composed of one cell or multiple cells and that the many
fuctions needed to sustain life are carried out within cells.
7.3.4 – Compare and contrast similarities and differences among specialized sub cellular components
within plant and animal cells(including organelles).
Simile: A simile is a figure of speech that directly compares two unlike things through some connective
word, usually being "like" or "as" or a verb such as "resembles." Similes can be very creative as long as
your reasoning is clear.
Project Guidelines:
1. You may work alone or with ONE partner from your class period (no groups of three!)
2. Due Date: Thursday, Sept. 15th!
Projects turned in after this date and time will be graded as LATE WORK.
3. Presentation format will be: poster or Google Presentation
Requirements:
1. Choose an animal or plant cell for your project.
2. Choose option A or B below:
A. Google Presentation:
 Choose either a plant or animal cell
 Complete the Simile Organizer
 Presentation:
o Title Slide - overall simile (Slide 1)
o one organelle simile for each part of the cell (1 slide for each) – use organizer
 include a picture of the analogy
 animal cell has less organelles, so there’s a slide added at the end (see organizer)
B. A poster-sized image of your simile that shows all the important details.(you will need to provide poster)
o This should be in color and show care and craftsmanship
o This drawing should include all the parts that represent the different organelles.
o Labels on the image that point out how each piece is similar to an important cell organelle
Ex. Simile: An animal cell is like a city because it has parts that must work together.
Organelle: The mitochondria in the cell is similar to a power plant because they both give energy.
check
Check off your steps as you go!
Decide if you are working alone or with a partner from your class period.
Decide if you will be using a plant cell or an animal cell for your simile- they have different organelles!
Choose your simile: A plant/ animal cell is like a ________________________ because _________________________________.
Complete the project organizer.
Begin creating your project on Google Drive with the correct number of slides/sketching your illustration
Revise your work! Make sure everything is neat, grammatically correct, and colorful! Use spell check! You must have 1 picture per slide of
what you’re comparing it to. You must have one complete sentence describing your simile per slide that includes your reasoning (see
examples above).
By Thursday, Sept. 15th email/share your project with:
[email protected]
*see examples of potential themes on the board (be CREATIVE and come up with your own)
Names:
 Sketch (no color)
 Label the parts of the theme with the organelle you’re comparing it to with a brief
explanation of how they’re similar – function(job) or looks.
