CELL PROJECT NAME: ___________________________________ Now that you are familiar with the specialized functions of cell organelles, it is time to challenge yourself to think critically and creatively about cell organelles to help you internalize the content. Step 1: Choose a format a) b) c) Cell Simile Poster Children’s book CD playlist Your choice should be based on what you think you will enjoy doing the most, not what is easiest for you to do. You have already mastered the “easy.” Now, it is time to challenge yourself to grow and work just as hard as your cells do every second of every day without rest. Option 1: Cell- Simile Poster Overall theme: Example: THEME: The cell is like a Circus. Nucleus = Ring master because he is in charge of the show Cell Membrane = ticket booth because they let people in & out Mitochondria = clowns because they have so much energy Etc. Individual Simile: Example: NO THEME (all similes are random) Nucleus = Pilot because they are flying the plane. Ribosome = Bar-B-Q shop because they cook protein Cell Wall = Great Wall of China because if provided Extra support & protection from invaders Etc. Final Turn in: Your poster with the following… Images (magazine or printed pictures) or drawings representing your similes o Label your images with the organelle they represent The completed chart on the back of this page (stapled to back of poster) Option 2: CELL CHILDREN'S BOOK For this project you will create the text and illustrations for a children's book about cells. Steps: 1. 2. 3. Chose a simile or other format by which to explain the content to children*. Fill out the chart on the back of this page in complete sentences. *Remember: Children need complex concepts to be broken down into the simplest form or connections made between things they experience in their daily lives Write the story You are expected to include all of the organelles listed in the chart on the back of this page. Illustrate the story I encourage you to illustrate your own story, but you can also use magazine or printed images. Examples: Cell organelles as characters in a fairytale that do things related to their function in the cell. (king is the nucleus) Cell organelle simile (cell membrane is like the door to your house – it lets things in and out) Etc… Final Turn in: -- Illustrated & authored children’s book (in color and in the format of a multi-page book) -- The completed chart on the back of this page (stapled to back of poster) Option 3: CD Playlist Steps: 1. 2. Choose a song that represents the function of an organelle. In the chart on the back of this page, explain how this song relates to the function of the organelle. Remember to write in complete sentences! For Example: Chloroplast = “Suga Suga” because the chloroplast is where Sugar is made… Vacuole = “Blame it on the Rain” because the vacuole stores water, extra sugar, & nutrients… Final Turn in: CD with 10 song playlist, cover image, and completed chart on the back of this page Organelle Nucleus Mitochondria Chloroplast Ribosome Cell Membrane Cell Wall Vacuole Cilia or Flagella Cytoplasm Lysosome Endoplasmic Reticulum Golgi Apparatus Simile or Song Explanation (explain your simile or song choice)
