Vocabulary List 6
66. Genetics is the study of the inheritance of traits.
67. Trait is a physical characteristic
68. Genes are parts of a chromosome that determine an organism’s traits.
69. Inherited Traits are characteristics that are passed from parent to child
70. Acquired traits are characteristics you learn or create yourself.
71. Alleles are different forms of a trait
72. Dominant traits cover or hide other traits
73. Recessive traits sometimes are hidden by another trait.
74. Phenotype of an organism is its appearance. (ex. dimples or no dimples)
75. Genotype of an organism is its gene combination. (ex. DD or Dd or dd)
76. Punnett square is a tool used to predict the results of a genetic cross.
77. Pure for a trait means that both genes inherited for a trait are the same.
(ex . DD or dd)
78. Hybrid for a trait means that both genes inherited for a trait are different.
(ex. Dd)
79. Homozygous means pure for a trait.
80. Heterozygous means hybrid for a trait.
81. Probability is the branch of math that studies the likelihood of an event
occurring.
82. Pedigree is a tool used by scientists to trace a trait through many
generations of a family.
This list is all genetic vocabulary for Chapter 5 and could appear on the
test.
