To help you define the words and prepare for the Prefix, Suffix and Root Word Test, here are
some root words, prefixes and suffixes used in Unit One.









de- = without or remove (dehydration is the removal of water)
di- = two (disaccharide: a sugar molecule consisting of two monosaccharides)
hydr- = water (dehydrate: to remove water from)
macro- = large (macromolecule: a giant molecule in a living organism formed by the joining of smaller molecules)
-mer = part (monomer: a chemical subunit that serves as a building block of a polymer)
mono- = single (monomer: a chemical subunit that serves as a building block of a polymer)
poly- = many (polymer: a large molecule consisting of many monomers covalently joined
together in a chain; polysaccharide: many monosaccharides joined together)
-soma = a body (chromosome: the structure carrying the genetic material found in the nucleus of a eukaryotic cell)
-vari- = change (variable: something that changes in an experiment)
